AUGUST 2007 - EPA Notes Role of Waste-to-Energy Plants in Correcting Landfill Problems in Puerto Rico

Release date: 08/29/2007

(San Juan, P.R.) When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the Municipality of Aguadilla must permanently close its landfill by April 2010, its regional administator noted waste-to-energy facilities' role as part of a long-term solution to waste management in Puerto Rico.

Alan J. Steinberg, EPA Regional Administrator, is quoted saying, “At present, many landfills in Puerto Rico are so poorly run that closure is needed to protect the health of the surrounding communities. Along with correcting the landfill problem in Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth also needs to promote reduction of waste, recycling and waste-to-energy plants.”
