(New York, NY) New York City runs the largest sanitation department in the world and collects more than 12,000 tons of trash a day. Covanta's Essex facility converts some of the municipal waste into energy.
The reason why? In a CBS-2 news report, New York City Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty notes: “You can’t continue to landfill waste. At some point, you have to come up with new technology. Waste-to-energy today is the best technology that is available.”
