Covanta Hennepin Energy Resource Co., L.P., located just north of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, began commercial operation in October 1989. It serves Hennepin County, Minnesota's largest with a population of over one million people-25% of the state's entire population. The facility is designed to process 1,212 tons-per-day of mixed municipal solid waste which generates up to 39.6 megawatts of renewable energy. After plant energy usage, approximately 33.7 megawatts are sold to Xcel Energy Co.
